We love Iran. Hacked by Ashiyane Digital Security! Shadow_Walker58 was here.

It is unclear if hackers only defaced the website or got their hands on any sensitive data, but this is not the first time when Ashiyane Digital Security has attacked U.S. government websites. In past the Oregon State’s City of Amity and Sutherlin City website was also hacked by same group.

At the time of publishing this article, the Clarkston City website had its targeted link still hacked.

FBI: Iran Hackers May Conduct Cyber Attacks on U.S Defence, Energy Sector.

US energy, defense and educational institutions are the top targets of a possible sophisticated cyber attack from the Iranian hackers, says a confidential document from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Cylance Inc, a cyber security firm, had also flagged this cyber hacking operation last week aiming critical infrastructure worldwide.  Dubbed as “Operation Cleaver”, it has already attacked more than 50 victims in 16 countries, including the United States.

The FBI has technical details about the malware as well as ways to thwart it in their confidential report named “Flash.” Interested businesses can contact FBI for further details, the English daily Reuters said.

The attacks are generally launched from two Iran-based IP addresses; however, FBI did not attribute these attacks to the Iranian government.

The cyber-security firm thinks otherwise and believes it is an Iranian government backed cyber operation. Its Chief Executive, Stuart McClure, said, “It underscores Iran’s determination and fixation on large-scale compromise of critical infrastructure.”

The Pentagon and the National Security Agency did not make any comments.

Tehran’s cyber capabilities saw an upward swing since 2010 when the country’s nuclear program was hit by Stuxnet computer virus, believed to be the brainchild of the US and Israel.

Bloomberg Businessweek reported the February 2014 Las Vegas Sands Corp cyber-attack, which crippled thousands of servers, was the handiwork of Iranian hackers who wanted to punish the company CEO Sheldon Adelson. The CEO had commented about detonating a nuclear bomb in Iran.

Iran’s cyber-attacks are noted for their sophistication.

“They are good and have a lot of talent in the country. They are definitely a serious threat, no question,” said Dave Kennedy, CEO of TrustedSEC LLC.

Chinese Malware Found Targeting Visitors on Afghan Govt. Websites.

All eyes are now open on the possible future wars and their tactics since 2014 has made public several cyber-attacks on both governmental and private entities.

The most recent of these attacks is a major hacking that took place on several Afghan governmental sites including several ministries; (“gov.af“) namely: Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Finance, and even the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

The attack was discovered by the Virginia-based form for cyber security known as ThreatConnect.

chinese-malware-found-targeting-visitors-on-afghan-govt-websites

The team at ThreatConnect found a corrupted JavaScript file hosting content on ‘gov.af’ websites, which is the domain used to host Afghan governmental websites. The worst part of the discovery is that there was no antivirus available to counter the malware. One Java File showed a time stamp as recent as December 16, making this one of the most recent such cyber-attacks.

The malware itself is being linked to China and is being used to infect not only the websites it has invaded but also the unsuspecting visitors to those sites. The link with China is rooted in very political grounds and even the date of the attack itself is linked to an official Chinese visit to Afghanistan but that remains to be confirmed.

Such malware attack is usually called a “watering-hole” attack because of its continuous effect. The attack will eventually affect every single visitor to those trusted Afghan websites and therefore infect a lot of unsuspicious victims, just like an infected watering hold would infect everyone using it. The problem is that such a relatively small attack can reach a number of global targets because of its potential spread and the hackers behind it will simply follow the threads of data until they reach their intended target.

It is worth mentioning here that this recent attack has also come in the wake of other cyber-attacks that have made the headlines such as that on the Sands Casino Empire in Las Vegas and Sony Pictures earlier this year.
